Trying to decide the right pet for you or your family can be a difficult task. Would you like a pet that is sweet and fluffy, sleek and aggressive, or laid back and low maintenance? Which ever you choose, make sure that it is the right fit for you or your family.
If you or your family has never owned a pet before, first identify the most important characteristics about your life style. Consider such questions as: How much free time can you devote to a pet? Are you or your family active? Do you have adequate space in your house or yard? Are there health problems or allergies to consider?
Once you commit to buying a pet, the Better Business Bureau suggests the following tips:
ü Avoid the urge to impulse buy. As with any important decision making situation, start with word of mouth. Talk to co-workers, friends, and neighbors about their pet experiences.
ü Find out as much as you can about the pet you are considering buying. Read books and attend pet shows. Observe different types of pets and their owners. Talk to the breeders and handlers. See if the pet’s traits and your requirements coincide.
ü Visit your local pet store or animal shelter. If purchasing from a pet store ask what the store’s refund and return policy is. Also ask what the policy is should their be health related issues with the pet after purchase. Contact the BBB for a reliability report on the store you are considering purchasing your pet from.
ü If you are considering a cat or dog for a family pet, head to the breeder or animal shelter. When visiting breeders, attempt to see the mother (and father, if possible) as well as the littermates. Ask for names and phone numbers of previous clients, and follow up with them. This can be the best time to find out about the animal’s temperament and health, breeder after-care, and the fulfillment of any guarantees.
